How overtime pay works in Kuwait

Kuwait's private sector labour law sets three different overtime rates, depending on when the extra hours are worked. These are minimums: your contract can give you more, never less.

Extra hours on a working day

Article 66

You are paid your normal hourly wage plus at least 25%. Overtime needs a written order from the employer, and the law limits it to:

Working on your weekly rest day

Article 67

You are paid at least 50% extra for those hours, and you are also owed another day off in its place.

Working on a public holiday

Article 68

You are paid double wage for the hours worked, plus a compensatory day off.

How the hourly wage is worked out

Divide the monthly wage by the actual working days in the month (rest days are paid but not counted), then by your daily working hours. The wage means basic salary plus the allowances paid to you regularly, not basic salary alone (Article 55).

450 KD ÷ 26 days ÷ 8 hours = 2.163 KD per hour
10 overtime hours × 2.163 × 1.25 = 27.043 KD
8 rest-day hours × 2.163 × 1.50 = 25.962 KD
